I have arrived… the successful completion of my first week of student teaching! I had assumed I would be tired… yet the word tired does not adequately express the level of exhaustion that overwhelmed me by Wednesday afternoon. However, I am happy to say that it has been a happy and satisfied sort of exhaustion. Each night as I fall into bed by 9pm, no longer the elusive night owl, I am slightly caught off guard by the smile that plays over my lips. I am actually looking forward to going back for more in the morning!
This first week consisted of more observation hours, a faculty meeting, a proctoring lesson and time to work on lesson plans. I have found the process of gradually easing myself into the classroom to be helpful and have found it useful in acclimating me to my new schedule.
The drama of high school is immediately apparent to me and I am once again amazed by the intense emotional state of the adolescent mind. Likewise, I am impressed by the amiability of these young adults. Through my teacher preparation program I have been trained to teach -- to use engaging and innovative pedagogical methods while adhering to the latest research on classroom behavioral management. Yet, I was never truly trained on how to interact with a teenager! I am happy to say however, that it seems to be coming quite naturally and these students actually make the day enjoyable. I have noticed that when one-on-one with the students they are more often than not incredibly respectful and are often extremely eager to share their thoughts and life stories with teachers.
Tuesday afternoon was the first time a student called me by name in the hallway. What a heady and exhilarating feeling. I enjoyed my first week student teaching immensely and am looking forward to what next week has in store!
Oh, and wishing for no snow next week, have to get these hours in before Brazil!
